As part of the normal aging process the body begins to lose strength, mobility, and flexibility. With this often comes a decrease in confidence which may have resulted in you not being able to do the things you would like to do.

This doesn’t need to hinder your lifestyle - physiotherapy can assist in bringing renewed energy, strength and mobility if correctly assessed and administered.

How can Physio improve strength & flexibility?

There is no need to accept limited mobility as just the way it is.

At TK Physio we will work alongside you and any family members, or carers you wish to be involved, to determine realistic goals and then work with you to achieve these. We will listen to you and be there every step of the way.

TK Physio have an accessible clinic to enable you to get to us easily or we can provide a home physio service if you are unable to come to our clinic. In either location we will be able to set your rehabilitation programme to suit your needs and environment.

Age Related Changes

Bones

A normal part of aging is a decrease in the density of bones, after the age of 35 bone loss occurs gradually. Younger than you thought?

Bone loss becomes more rapid in women for a few years after the menopause, however, men also experience bone loss.

This decrease in bone density can lead to osteoporosis and possible osteoporotic fracture further down the line.

It has been shown that specific exercises can help to reduce the age-related decline in bone density and that this, combined with balance exercises, can help to reduce the chance of a future fracture.

Muscles

The fibre types which make up muscles change with aging and fatty deposits can occur leading to increased stiffness and decreased balance which in turn can affect mobility and function. However, it has been shown that consistent exercise of the right type and intensity can change this.

GOOD NEWS –  you can do something about the decline in your bones and muscles by getting a tailored physio programme from TK Physio to guide you in the right exercises for you helping you to slow down the effects of aging.

You do not need to have a pre-existing condition to access our older adult services!

Getting older does not mean an end to being active.

It has been shown that exercise helps to lower your risk of obesity, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and even cancer. It also helps to boost your self-esteem, improve your sleep and give you more energy.

The current guidance is for older adults to do 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week and strengthening exercises twice a week.

I know this may sound like a lot but here at TK Physio we can help you to take the steps to work up to this in a way that is manageable for you. A full assessment of your current level will be carried out and you will be given a programme tailored for you. We will be there to support and guide you until you have reached your realistic exercise goal.

As well has lowering your risk of the conditions mentioned exercise can also help you to slow the effect of aging on the body, reduce aches and pains and help you to stay steady on your feet. As a bonus, activity also helps your thinking skills.

These are some very good reasons for making the investment in your health and wellbeing now, so you reap the rewards later.

Prevention is better than cure.
